James Coniglio, LCSW

James has been working in mental health for over 10 years, connecting with individuals on a personal level across a wide range of behavioral and emotional challenges. With a combination of psychodynamic therapy, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy, James seeks to engage clients in a way that is authentic to them in working towards solutions. He has worked with diagnoses ranging from depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia among others.
Background: James Coniglio began his career working for Ability Beyond, an organization servicing individuals living with intellectual disabilities. He received his Masters in Social Work from Fordham Graduate School of Social Service in 2008, with a focus on clinical practice with children and families using psychodynamic psychotherapy. He worked for a number of years in child welfare using an evidence-based model before finding his niche in hospital psychiatry. Currently, he is a senior social worker at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn. He was the first social worker to be assigned specifically to the psychiatric emergency department at this hospital. Here, he defined the position with social work principles of advocacy and evidence-based approaches. He developed the comprehensive psychosocial assessment that is now the standard for psychiatry, with a focus on psychosocial stressors, family history, and trauma.
